Broadbent Fold Primary and Nursery School is an exciting, stimulating and inclusive place to learn. Our curriculum is ambitious and designed to give all learners, particularly the most disadvantaged and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. We follow the National Curriculum and develop skills and knowledge in the full range of core and foundation subjects. Our curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills for future learning and future jobs. We deliver this learning through a cross-curricular, topic based approach, in which children learn through question and challenge.
The Broadbent Fold curriculum is a strength of the school and inspires pupils to learn through experiences. The children are central to every decision and opportunity we offer and they play a major role in designing our curriculum. Our teaching enables children to make connections in the knowledge and skills that they acquire both now and in the future .Our teaching and planning is designed to help learners to remember in the long term the content they have been taught and to integrate new knowledge into larger concepts. Working in partnership with parents and other outside agencies to ensure the best possible support and outcomes for children is our key priority.

At Broadbent Fold we are committed to the development of the whole child which helps children to reach their full potential regardless of gender, disability, social class or special educational needs, in all areas of school life. We strive to ensure pupils are both numerate and literate by the end of Key Stage 2, preparing them as well as possible for moving on to secondary school. Teaching staff are resolute on the importance of a curriculum which teaches children the aspects of social, moral, cultural and spiritual development and understanding which ensures they become good citizens in a multicultural Britain. See our Wellbeing page for further information. We aim to give children a sense of self and an understanding and tolerance of others. Our topics and approaches help children to develop a sense of curiosity about the world and to take responsibility for their learning, attitude and achievements. We aim to provide children with real hooks for learning through enrichment activities such as visits, visitors and first hand experiences as we believe children learn by doing. See the link below for examples.
Phonics is taught in EYFS and Key Stage 1, following First Class at Phonics. This supports the teaching of reading and early spelling. Guided reading happens daily and involves whole class quality texts, which are diverse and challenging. Pupils in Key Stage 2 may require further phonics support if they did not achieve the expected outcomes in Key Stage 1. Children are also heard reading independently by other adults in school, reading buddies or volunteers. Reading schemes used at Broadbent Fold include: Phonics Bug, Big Cat Phonics and the Oxford Reading Tree. Pupils in EYFS and Key Stage 1 receive additional reading books to take home that are linked to the phonics phase of the pupil. Library books are also taken home for families to enjoy. At the early stages of learning to read, reading materials are closely matched to learners’ phonics knowledge. Please see our English/ Phonics page for further information.
In the curriculum section of our website you will find further information and long term plans for each curriculum subject and year group. Click on each group to explore the subjects within. You will also find the medium term plans (what the children will actually be learning in class each half term), for each half term under each year group heading.
Careers Led Learning
We are part of a two-year pilot on Career's Led Learning. This can play a crucial role in helping our pupils to raise aspirations, broaden horizons, challenge stereotypes and develop the skills and sense of self to help reach their full potential. Please see our action plan below, showing our aims. You can also see the link here on the importance of this in our curriculum: https://www.careersandenterprise.co.uk/schools/primary/
